Explore the Democratic Republic of the Congo
From the creative energy of Kinshasa to the river landscapes, botanical gardens and heritage towns of Kongo Central, the Democratic Republic of the Congo offers a distinctive cultural and conservation story. Ngweta Africa Safaris introduces DR Congo (DRC) as our sixth destination with detailed sample travel routes focused primarily on the western part of the country.
Before you plan this journey
As of October 2026, the United States advises against all travel to DRC. The UK advises against all or all but essential travel to specified areas, including parts of Kinshasa and eastern DRC. Health-related travel restrictions may also apply. These are future planning concepts, not available departures or confirmed bookings. Before any quote, reassess government advisories, insurance validity, visas, health measures, local security and supplier availability.
Not a gorilla trekking offer: Virunga gorilla and Nyiragongo tourism remains closed until further notice, and Kahuzi-Biega is closed to tourists. The routes on this page deliberately avoid promising access to eastern DRC.

Western DRC experiences worth knowing
Kinshasa and the National Museum
The capital offers opportunities to learn about Congolese music, contemporary art and cultural heritage, including the National Museum of the DRC. Visits require local planning and attention to the prevailing security situation.
Lola ya Bonobo conservation
Lola ya Bonobo provides guided conservation education about rescued bonobos near Kinshasa. Opening days, access and any public-health measures must be confirmed directly with the sanctuary.
Kisantu, Zongo Falls and Kongo Central
Western DRC has botanical heritage, waterfall scenery and river-linked towns. Potential road routes through Kisantu, Mbanza-Ngungu and Matadi require detailed transport, security and accommodation checks.
About eastern DRC gorilla trekking
The country is home to mountain gorillas and eastern lowland gorillas, but Virunga gorilla trekking and Nyiragongo hikes are closed, and Kahuzi-Biega is closed to tourism. We do not list those as active bookable experiences.
Plan for the future
Below are ten suggested DRC itineraries presented for research and future travel planning, not immediate bookings. If your goal is gorilla trekking now, consider our Uganda or Rwanda safari collections instead.
