Safari overview
Discover Kinshasa’s creative world and western DRC’s river-linked history. This sample programme introduces the Democratic Republic of the Congo through its people, history and landscapes, with an emphasis on western DRC. Activity availability and safe movements cannot be confirmed in advance.
Before you plan this journey
As of October 2026, the United States advises against all travel to DRC. The UK advises against all or all but essential travel to specified areas, including parts of Kinshasa and eastern DRC. Health-related travel restrictions may also apply. These are future planning concepts, not available departures or confirmed bookings. Before any quote, reassess government advisories, insurance validity, visas, health measures, local security and supplier availability.
Not a gorilla trekking offer: Virunga gorilla and Nyiragongo tourism remains closed until further notice, and Kahuzi-Biega is closed to tourists. The routes on this page deliberately avoid promising access to eastern DRC.

Detailed day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kinshasa and private welcome
Meet the appointed airport representative at N’djili International Airport after immigration, luggage collection and any applicable health controls. Travel to a pre-arranged hotel in a suitable part of Kinshasa and receive a clear briefing on the local programme. Use the remaining afternoon to rest or enjoy a quiet meal at the hotel. Airport transfers, hotel standards and movement within the city must be agreed before any travel arrangements are confirmed.
Proposed overnight: Kinshasa (subject to confirmed hotel). Meals and accommodation category will be specified in the quotation.
Day 2: National Museum of the DRC and Congolese heritage
Explore the National Museum of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, subject to its published opening schedule and local travel guidance. A guided visit introduces cultural collections, the history of the country and the diverse communities represented across its provinces. Allow enough time to examine the exhibits rather than rushing through. The museum is normally closed on Mondays, so the programme must be shifted to suit the actual travel dates.
Proposed overnight: Kinshasa (subject to confirmed hotel). Meals and accommodation category will be specified in the quotation.
Day 3: Kinshasa galleries and contemporary creative culture
Spend time learning about Kinshasa’s vibrant creative scene through locally arranged gallery or artist-studio visits. Where possible, meet a resident artist or cultural interpreter to hear how music, visual art and everyday urban life influence contemporary Congolese expression. Photography is by permission, especially around private studios and people. The specific venues are chosen with local partners after checking access, exhibition dates and safe transport arrangements.
Proposed overnight: Kinshasa (subject to confirmed hotel). Meals and accommodation category will be specified in the quotation.
Day 4: Lola ya Bonobo sanctuary visit
Subject to permission, access and prevailing travel advice, visit Lola ya Bonobo on the outskirts of Kinshasa with a pre-arranged local guide. This sanctuary supports rescued bonobos and conservation education; it is not a wild bonobo trekking experience. A guided visit provides context about threats to great apes, rehabilitation and habitat protection. Respect the sanctuary’s visitor rules, quiet viewing distances and restrictions on touching or feeding animals. Check the facility’s opening days before scheduling.
Proposed overnight: Kinshasa (subject to confirmed hotel). Meals and accommodation category will be specified in the quotation.
Day 5: Congo River viewpoints and riverside life
Discover an appropriate public or private riverside viewpoint on the Congo River and learn about the waterway’s role in regional transport, trade and daily life. This is primarily a land-based sightseeing experience, not a promised boat cruise. Any boat activity must be separately assessed for operator licensing, safety equipment, river conditions and local advisories. Enjoy time for photographs only where your guide confirms that photography is permitted.
Proposed overnight: Kinshasa (subject to confirmed hotel). Meals and accommodation category will be specified in the quotation.
Day 6: Drive to Kisantu and botanical garden
Following a morning departure, travel toward Kisantu in Kongo Central by an approved, locally checked road route. Explore the Jardin Botanique de Kisantu, known for its established trees and plant collections, if open to visitors. Walking is generally gentle, though paths and facilities vary. The journey takes a substantial part of the day once traffic, stops and checkpoints are considered. Overnight accommodation in the area is subject to verification before the programme is confirmed.
Proposed overnight: Kisantu / Kongo Central (subject to suitable accommodation). Meals and accommodation category will be specified in the quotation.
Day 7: Zongo Falls and forest-edge scenery
Consider a locally guided excursion to the Zongo Falls area, known for its impressive waterfall scenery in Kongo Central. Access, road conditions, entry arrangements and safe viewing points must be checked immediately before travel; a visit is not guaranteed. Stay only within authorized areas and do not enter the water near the falls. If weather or security advice changes, substitute a botanical or cultural activity closer to Kisantu.
Proposed overnight: Kisantu / Kongo Central (subject to suitable accommodation). Meals and accommodation category will be specified in the quotation.
Day 8: Transfer to Matadi and Congo River setting
Continue west to Matadi with sufficient time for roadside breaks and a daylight arrival. Where conditions permit, view the Congo River corridor and the Pont Maréchal from an approved public vantage point. A local representative can introduce the city’s relationship with river commerce and inland transport. Accommodation and transfer timings should be prebooked and rechecked with local partners, since long drives and checkpoint delays can affect the schedule.
Proposed overnight: Matadi / Kongo Central (subject to suitable accommodation). Meals and accommodation category will be specified in the quotation.
Day 9: Return to Kinshasa at a comfortable pace
Travel back toward Kinshasa in daylight, allowing additional time for road conditions, traffic and comfort stops. The exact route and departure time will be decided with vetted local transport partners close to the journey. If a long-distance transfer would be too demanding, an intermediate overnight stop can be built into the final proposal. Reach your selected hotel and review airport transfer instructions for the following day.
Proposed overnight: Kinshasa (subject to confirmed hotel). Meals and accommodation category will be specified in the quotation.
Day 10: Departure from Kinshasa
Enjoy breakfast and check out according to your onward flight schedule. Your confirmed transport provider will advise on the appropriate airport reporting window, security processes and any health or immigration documentation. No major sightseeing is scheduled because city traffic can be unpredictable. If your flight departs late, an optional short activity can be discussed, but only when it does not create a risk of missing the flight.
Proposed overnight: Kinshasa (subject to confirmed hotel). No overnight stay is required if your flight departs this day.
