Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali
Meet your private driver-guide at Kigali International Airport and transfer to your hotel. Depending on your landing time, enjoy a brief introduction to the city or a restful evening before travelling on to Rwanda’s parks.
Your guide will review the confirmed activities, any gorilla or chimpanzee permits, and realistic driving times. Keeping the first evening unhurried is especially helpful if your safari continues to the highlands early the following day.
Planning note: Arrival timing matters: a late flight may require a city overnight before a long road transfer.
Suggested overnight area: Kigali. Lodge selection will be confirmed in your quotation.
Day 2: Akagera wildlife game drive
Explore Akagera National Park with a private vehicle and guide, moving between hills, lakes and savanna. The park provides opportunities to look for elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and predators; none can be promised on a particular drive.
Morning and later afternoon drives often allow more comfortable temperatures for wildlife viewing. Choose overnight accommodation that minimises unnecessary driving between park sectors, and follow ranger and road-use guidance throughout the visit.
Suggested overnight area: Akagera region. Lodge selection will be confirmed in your quotation.
Day 3: Akagera safari drive and return to Kigali
Explore Akagera National Park with a private vehicle and guide, moving between hills, lakes and savanna. The park provides opportunities to look for elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and predators; none can be promised on a particular drive.
Morning and later afternoon drives often allow more comfortable temperatures for wildlife viewing. Choose overnight accommodation that minimises unnecessary driving between park sectors, and follow ranger and road-use guidance throughout the visit.
Suggested overnight area: Akagera region. Lodge selection will be confirmed in your quotation.
Day 4: Transfer to Musanze
Head northwest from Kigali or the previous stop toward Musanze, the gateway to Volcanoes National Park. The route passes terraced hills and cultivated valleys with views of the Virunga volcanoes when weather allows.
Check into your lodge and review the next morning’s park reporting time, permits and trekking kit. A short local experience may fit in the afternoon, but it is sensible to keep the evening restful before gorilla or golden monkey tracking.
Suggested overnight area: Musanze / Volcanoes. Lodge selection will be confirmed in your quotation.
Day 5: Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes
Report to Volcanoes National Park headquarters near Kinigi for the ranger briefing and gorilla group allocation. The escorted hike may involve muddy trails, bamboo forest and steep volcanic slopes; distance and trekking time depend on the gorillas’ movements. Once the family is located, standard observation time is limited under park regulations.
Prepare closed hiking boots, gloves if useful, a rain jacket and drinking water. Park staff direct the encounter and explain appropriate wildlife behaviour. After trekking, return to your Musanze-area lodge, with a leisurely afternoon rather than another ambitious transfer whenever possible.
Suggested overnight area: Musanze / Volcanoes. Lodge selection will be confirmed in your quotation.
Day 6: Golden monkey tracking in Volcanoes
Join an authorised ranger-led golden monkey tracking experience on the slopes of Volcanoes National Park. These lively primates are associated with bamboo habitats and may move quickly through dense vegetation, so the walk and viewing conditions vary from day to day.
This is a separate activity from mountain gorilla trekking and requires the applicable permit or booking. Return to your lodge after the visit, with an optional community or Musanze sightseeing stop if the schedule allows. Water-resistant clothing and sturdy shoes are useful.
Suggested overnight area: Musanze / Volcanoes. Lodge selection will be confirmed in your quotation.
Day 7: Kigali return and departure
Return toward Kigali by road, allowing stops for photographs and refreshments as the day’s schedule permits. Mountain roads and city traffic can affect arrival times, so flight connections should have a comfortable buffer.
Your driver-guide will arrange the agreed airport drop-off or city hotel transfer. Where a morning trek and a same-day international departure appear in the suggested route, a late flight or additional overnight may be necessary.
Planning note: Please confirm your flight time before treating this as a same-day airport connection.
Final arrangements: Departure or onward transfer according to your confirmed travel plans.
