Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Kigali

Meet your private driver-guide at Kigali International Airport and transfer to your hotel. Depending on your landing time, enjoy a brief introduction to the city or a restful evening before travelling on to Rwanda’s parks.

Your guide will review the confirmed activities, any gorilla or chimpanzee permits, and realistic driving times. Keeping the first evening unhurried is especially helpful if your safari continues to the highlands early the following day.

Planning note: Arrival timing matters: a late flight may require a city overnight before a long road transfer.

Suggested overnight area: Kigali. Lodge selection will be confirmed in your quotation.

Day 2: Kigali history and markets

Explore Kigali with a locally guided introduction to its neighbourhoods, markets and modern cultural life. Where requested, a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial can provide important historical context; approach this sensitive place with respect and allow enough time for reflection.

The rest of the day can include craft galleries or a relaxed meal, depending on opening hours. City sightseeing is fitted around arrival or departure arrangements rather than treating airport formalities as optional.

Suggested overnight area: Kigali. Lodge selection will be confirmed in your quotation.

Day 3: Travel to Akagera

Explore Akagera National Park with a private vehicle and guide, moving between hills, lakes and savanna. The park provides opportunities to look for elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and predators; none can be promised on a particular drive.

Morning and later afternoon drives often allow more comfortable temperatures for wildlife viewing. Choose overnight accommodation that minimises unnecessary driving between park sectors, and follow ranger and road-use guidance throughout the visit.

Suggested overnight area: Akagera region. Lodge selection will be confirmed in your quotation.

Day 4: Akagera game drives

Explore Akagera National Park with a private vehicle and guide, moving between hills, lakes and savanna. The park provides opportunities to look for elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and predators; none can be promised on a particular drive.

Morning and later afternoon drives often allow more comfortable temperatures for wildlife viewing. Choose overnight accommodation that minimises unnecessary driving between park sectors, and follow ranger and road-use guidance throughout the visit.

Suggested overnight area: Akagera region. Lodge selection will be confirmed in your quotation.

Day 5: Lake Ihema and return journey

Enjoy a guided boat excursion on Lake Ihema when operating conditions and the park schedule allow. The lake margins can be rewarding for waterbirds, hippos and other wildlife, complementing the broad savanna habitats seen on game drives.

Leave enough time for transfers between your lodge, boat departure point and the next activity. A separate road-based safari in Akagera can then focus on different ecosystems, including woodland and grassland. All excursions are subject to confirmed operator bookings.

Suggested overnight area: As confirmed on the route. Lodge selection will be confirmed in your quotation.

Day 6: Transfer to Nyungwe region

Continue through Rwanda’s Southern or Western Province to the Nyungwe Forest region. Expect winding highland roads and beautiful views of cultivated hills, tea estates and the mountain forest. This is a longer travel day from Kigali or Akagera, and stops should be planned conservatively.

Settle into accommodation suited to your booked forest activity. The exact chimpanzee tracking or canopy-walk access point should be confirmed in advance, as different trailheads can be far apart.

Suggested overnight area: Nyungwe forest region. Lodge selection will be confirmed in your quotation.

Day 7: Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe

Travel to the agreed Nyungwe or Cyamudongo tracking assembly point for an early briefing with park guides. Tracking chimpanzees involves forest trails and variable walking times because the animals move freely; encounters are not guaranteed.

Nyungwe’s montane rainforest also offers remarkable plants and birdlife. Keep the afternoon flexible for rest or a gentle permitted nature stop, particularly after an early start. A lodge near the tracking sector reduces the need for pre-dawn road transfers.

Suggested overnight area: Nyungwe forest region. Lodge selection will be confirmed in your quotation.

Day 8: Nyungwe canopy forest experience

Experience Nyungwe’s forest from a different perspective on its well-known canopy walkway, subject to opening, conditions and an advance activity booking. The route involves walking trails and suspended sections above the vegetation, with expansive views when mist clears.

Those who prefer to avoid heights can choose a more grounded ranger-led forest walk where an appropriate alternative is available. Keep an eye on weather and trail conditions; the highland climate can be cool and wet even outside the principal rainy months.

Suggested overnight area: Nyungwe forest region. Lodge selection will be confirmed in your quotation.

Day 9: Scenic Lake Kivu stop

Travel through Rwanda’s scenic western hills toward Lake Kivu. Small settlements, terraced farmland and lakeside viewpoints offer a slower pace after forest tracking or safari drives. The final stop depends on whether your confirmed route uses Gisenyi/Rubavu, Karongi or another lakeside base.

Enjoy the lodge setting or choose a guided waterfront activity. Any boat trip should be arranged with a reputable operator and suitable safety gear. Relax by the water, knowing that the following road journey back toward Kigali or Musanze needs realistic transfer time.

Suggested overnight area: Lake Kivu. Lodge selection will be confirmed in your quotation.

Day 10: Lake Kivu leisure activities

Day 11: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Travel to the Volcanoes National Park region around Musanze and Kinigi, known for misty mountain scenery and mountain-gorilla habitat. The road journey offers views over Rwanda’s terraced hills, with breaks where safe viewpoints are available.

Your accommodation location will be chosen in relation to the activity briefing point. Review the permit arrangements with your guide and prepare for a potentially early, wet and physical forest excursion the next morning.

Suggested overnight area: Musanze / Volcanoes. Lodge selection will be confirmed in your quotation.

Day 12: Gorilla trekking and Kigali return

Report to Volcanoes National Park headquarters near Kinigi for the ranger briefing and gorilla group allocation. The escorted hike may involve muddy trails, bamboo forest and steep volcanic slopes; distance and trekking time depend on the gorillas’ movements. Once the family is located, standard observation time is limited under park regulations.

Prepare closed hiking boots, gloves if useful, a rain jacket and drinking water. Park staff direct the encounter and explain appropriate wildlife behaviour. After trekking, return to your Musanze-area lodge, with a leisurely afternoon rather than another ambitious transfer whenever possible.

Planning note: Please confirm your flight time before treating this as a same-day airport connection. Combining gorilla trekking with a distant airport transfer is not suitable for every flight; an additional overnight is strongly recommended unless there is a verified workable schedule.

Final arrangements: Departure or onward transfer according to your confirmed travel plans.
